Hello and welcome to year 1C.

My name is Mrs Cumberbatch. I am one of the year 1 class teachers. Within our classroom we also have two teaching assistants, Mrs Almasri who works Monday to Thursday and Miss Hussain who works with us on a Friday.

The children have settled in really well and I am looking forward to getting to know them throughout the year.

In Math we use the White Rose math’s scheme. During Math this term we are looking at Place Value. We will be working with numbers up to 20. We will be representing numbers using pictures and counting objects. We will also be identifying tens and ones in numbers from 0 to 20. You can help at home by practicing lots of reading and writing of numbers e.g. example 12 is written as twelve and is made up of one ten and two ones.

Within Literacy, we are looking at the features of Traditional Tales. Our writing focus this term is to punctuate our sentences correctly using capital letters, finger spaces, connectives and full stops. You can help at home by getting your child to say their sentence out loud before writing it down and let them read what they have written to ensure that it makes sense.
It is very important that you read with your child each day so that they can become confident readers and develop a love for reading! Phonics will be a main focus this year as all year 1 children will be expected to take a Phonics test in July.

Our current topic is Transport. The children will be learning about various types of transport. They will also be comparing old-fashioned and modern methods of transportation as well as categorising transport into 3 groups: water, land and sea. We will be doing lots of art and design technology work this half term, including making rockets, boats and hot air balloons.
In Science, we will be looking at different materials and their properties e.g. Wood (material) is strong and rough (Properties). The children will investigate various materials and make their own transport which links to our transport topic this term.

Year 1 do Gymnastics on a Tuesday. They will need a plain white t-shirt and black leggings or shorts. We also have outdoor games on a Wednesday with a Manchester City coach. As it is getting cold, your child will need a black hoodie or jumper with black jogging bottoms and a plain white t-shirt. Please can you also provide a pair of trainers.

Homework will be given out every Friday in their green homework book. This will be a homework menu and a list of spellings. The children are only required to do 1 task from the homework menu each week and the spelling quiz will be done on Fridays. Please make sure that the homework book is returned no later than the following Thursday.

If you have any questions or concerns, Please feel free to speak to myself, Mrs Almasri or Miss Hussain after school. We are always happy to support you in any way we can.
