Hello and welcome to year 1!
My name is Mrs Cumberbatch. I am the year 1 class teacher. Within our classroom we also have the teaching assistant called Miss Cunningham.
The children have settled in really well and I am looking forward for all the children’s progress and achievements throughout the year.
During Maths this term we are looking at Place Value. We will be working with numbers up to 20. We will be representing numbers using pictures and counting objects. We will also be identifying tens and ones in numbers from 10 to 20. You can help at home by practising lots of reading and writing of numbers e.g. example 12 is written as twelve and is made up of one ten and two ones.
Within Literacy, we will be having lots of fun learning about Traditional Tales and their features. Our writing focus this term is to punctuate our sentences correctly using capital letters, finger spaces, connectives and full stops. You can help at home by getting your child to say their sentence out loud before writing it down and let them read what they have written to ensure that it makes sense.
Please read as often as you can with your child at home. Reading to your child (in whichever language you feel comfortable in if you speak an additional language to English), listening to your child read and talking about the story e.g. the characters, the setting and what parts of a story they enjoy. Please encourage your child to bring their books back to school as soon as they need changing.
Our current topic is Houses and homes. We will be comparing different types of houses and homes both within our local area and throughout the world/history.
In Science, we will be looking at different materials and their properties e.g. Wood (material) is strong and rough (Properties). The children are going to investigate using different materials by making a house for ‘The Three Little Pigs’ to live in. We need to make sure that the pigs stay safe from the wolf!
In P.E the children will take part in outside games, gymnastics and dance. This takes place every Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure that your children bring their P.E kits in consistently.
Homework will be given out each Friday. This will be in the form of a homework menu. Only one challenge is to be completed per week.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to myself or Miss Cunningham after school. We are always happy to support you in any way we can.
