Year 2HK

Hello and welcome to Year 2!

We’re excited about the upcoming term with your children. My name is Miss Kerr, and I am your class teacher. Ms. Lawrence is our teaching assistant. We look forward to teaching your children in the coming year and hope to make learning engaging and interesting for everyone.

If you would like to talk to any of the Year 2 team, please look for us in the playground before and after school. We are happy to speak with you about any concerns you may have.

Ms R Lawrence

Teaching Assistant

This Summer term we’re starting our History unit on Eyam and The Plague. This is such an exciting and interesting topic which we’re sure the children will love learning about. We’ll learn about important historical figures who have made an impact on the world around them.

We’re also starting our new Geography unit which is our Local Area. This is where we will learn about what where we live and the surrounding areas. The children will also compare the local area from now and the past.

In English we will be starting with our new fiction text called ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. The children will produce their ending to this text based on their own predictions. We regularly assess your child’s writing skills throughout a unit of work and formally at the start and end of a topic.

In Science, we will be continuing with All Living Things and Their Habitats where the children will classify things into living, non-living and dead. The children will learn about a range of different habitats and how animals, including humans adapt to their conditions. The children will then be learning about Plants. Our focus will be on exploring how plants grow and what they need to survive.

In Maths, we are using the White Rose curriculum. Our first topic is fractions. In Year 2 we look at the following fractions in particular; ½, ¼, ¾, 2/4 and 1/3. Once we are secure with this, we will move onto Time. To prepare your child for this topic, it would be useful if you could start reading an analogue clock to the nearest 5minutes.

Our PE sessions will be on Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school on these days.

Our school PE kit is: A white t-shirt and black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and trainers or pumps.  Please make sure that your child’s PE kit is labelled with their name.

Homework: Homework in Year 2 consists of daily reading for 10 minutes minimum, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and completing their Maths homework, which is set each week on Class Dojo.

If you could work with your child using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division within 100) this will help them in preparation for our end of year assessments. Learn to tell the time. Practise writing stories and highlight any areas that your child maybe struggling with (missing punctuation, sense, spelling, tense).

Reading books: In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to read a variety of text types and books. Fluency and comprehension are especially important and this is something which can be helped by 10 minutes of reading at home every day. Your child will have the opportunity to independently choose their reading books on Monday.  We do Guided Reading sessions each day, and your child is heard twice a week to check their progress in reading. Children are moved to colour bands when they are ready to be challenged by the demands of the next level. We formally assess your child three times a year using a reading assessment, but an informal assessment takes place every day.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic year with your children.

The Year 2 team,

Miss Shields, Miss Kerr, Miss Lawrence, Mrs Rosa, Miss Dupont and Miss Adil
