Reception N

Welcome to Reception!

I am Mrs Neil, the class Teacher. We are extremely excited to be teaching your child and hope to make learning engaging and interesting for all.

If you’d like to talk to any of the Reception team, please look out for us in the playground after school. We are always happy to speak to you about any concerns you may have.

Welcome to Spring Term in Reception: The children have become so confident and independent and have all made so much progress since September. We are super proud of every one of them!

We have loved seeing so many special friendships develop with both our children and families here at Unity, and we are so grateful for all your support.

In the first half term of Spring, we took an icy trip to the Arctic to learn all about the animals and people who live there. This was the perfect topic to start our year with as it was so cold and snowy here in Manchester that the children could relate to the freezing temperatures of the Arctic.

The children really loved learning about Polar bears, Narwhals and Innuits. They amazed us with their factual recall and newly learned vocabulary during their writing activities.

Our topic during the second half of Spring Term will be ‘Tremendous Trees’.

We will be learning all about trees and the habitats they provide. We will be looking closely at all the different parts of trees, and how trees change through the seasons. We will build on our learning by finding out about how we can plant and care for trees in our outdoor area. We will also be making bird feeders and bird houses, and planting some wildflowers to attract insects, which in turn attract birds.

In Maths we will be continuing to recall number bond facts and will be using the language of ‘more than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ to compare quantities.

In phonics we will be continuing to revise our phase 3 sounds and will be looking at how we can read with fluency. We will also be using strategies to enable us to read longer words.

We will be continuing to change our reading books every Friday, so it is important that the children remember to bring their book bag to school each week. It will also really help your child with their reading by sharing a book with them every day.

Can you also make sure that your child has a bag of spare clothes on their peg. Please remember to put your child’s name in everything.

Each Tuesday, we will be having lots of fun with Coach Jess from Manchester City who comes and delivers our sports programme.

We will send you lots of photos, important information and key dates over Class Dojo so do keep an eye out for our weekly posts.

If you have any questions, please just pop in and see us. We are always happy to help.

Thank you for your support: Miss O’Toole, Mrs Neil and the Reception team.
