Unity Community Primary is a school in the heart of Cheetham. The school was the vision of local parents, the local community and The Big Life group, and has been developed to ensure pupils get the best start in life.

About Our School

Unity Community Primary began as a vision of local parents and we will always have parents and children leading the growth of the school. They are involved in all aspects of the school community; their views are listened to and valued. We work hard to meet the needs of all children, as well as support the wellbeing of families in our community. We have a strong staff team who know and are passionate about Cheetham, which we’re confident makes our school a place for children and the community to thrive.

We have over 375 pupils aged 4-11, coming from many different countries and speaking 38 different languages. Our pupils are happy children who love school, and we want to encourage them to have the best possible start in life. We work hard to be a truly inclusive community, that celebrates all languages and cultures within our school. Diversity, respect and tolerance are at the core of our school identity.

School gates open at 8.40 am and all children should be in class for 8.50 am. The register is taken at 8.50 am. Breakfast Club is available as a childcare facility from 8am. A varied menu is offered for breakfast and children are engaged in activities until the start of school.

Birth to Eleven Years Approach

Our school now has a daycare and can take children from 2 years old. We offer an integrated learning and development environment for children from birth to eleven years old.

Committed to creating an environment that respects all religions

We recognise that many of our pupils are Muslims. While we are not a faith school, we are committed to creating an environment that respects all religions and enables pupils to celebrate and practice their faith. For example:

  1. In Religious Education we teach about all religions, including Islam (the predominant faith in our school).
  2. Our history curriculum in Year 5 explores the origins and development of Islam.
  3. All food served in our schools is Halal.
  4. We celebrate major religious festivals, including Eid, Diwali, and Christmas.
  5. Provision is made for children in Upper KS2 who wish to pray during the school day.
  6. Our uniform policy supports modesty and inclusivity.

A UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting School

In 2015, Unity became a Rights Respecting school & in 2025, we are delighted to have been re-accredited the Gold Level of the award by Unicef UK. This is the highest accolade given by Unicef UK and shows a deep commitment to children’s rights, which are fully embedded throughout our school.

The difference that a Rights Respecting School makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole community.

Everyday our staff and children work hard to learn about the rights, uplift our school values, and enable our children to become happy, confident adults that make positive contributions to their communities. Being a Gold Rights Respecting school means that each child not only values and understands their differences but also values and understands the differences in others.

A Voice 21 Oracy School

At Unity, we believe that every child deserves a voice that is heard, respected, and empowered. That is why we are proud to be a Voice 21 Oracy School, committed to developing oracy (speaking and listening) skills through high-quality education, so our children are able to use their ‘Unity loud and clear voice’.

Voice 21 is the national charity that advocates for and supports schools in delivering a high-quality oracy education. In becoming a Voice 21 Oracy School, we are joining a network of over 1,100 schools across the UK that are transforming teaching and learning through talk.

Our Belonging Matters Charter Mark

The Belonging Matters Charter Mark is a national accreditation developed by Belonging Matters,  given to schools which best support international new arrivals and their families to settle quickly and to make progress in education. It highlights schools that offer the best possible experience for children who have been displaced from their home countries.

As a welcoming and inclusive school, Unity Community Primary is proud to have been awarded the Charter Mark, which recognises our work in providing an environment where everyone feels they truly belong. Achieving this mark highlights the work we do at Unity to ensure every child and family is respected, valued, safe and connected to the school community.

Eco-Schools Green Flag Recognised

As a school community that works hard to promote sustainability and raise environmental awareness, Unity holds the prestigious, internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation.

We empower our children to make a positive impact on our planet and take action to protect the planet and promote environmental responsibility across all areas of school life. Our pupils play a key role in leading eco-initiatives, from recycling and litter-picking to our Green Heroes growing vegetables and selling and donating clothing.

This award reflects our dedication to creating a greener future and embedding environmental values into our everyday learning.
