The Hive

Welcome to The Hive

The Hive is a time-limited and transitional place for pupils to rehearse skills needed to thrive in a mainstream classroom; with a high staff to pupil ratio ensuring a detailed understanding of individual needs.

The Hive offers a quieter, sensory-rich, engaging environment for SEND pupils, with communication skills at the heart of all learning opportunities. Pupils who attend The Hive come from a range of year groups, and this provision is available to those pupils who meet a clear entry criteria under guidance from Mrs Oliver, the SENCO.

Inclusion: Inclusive practise is a fundamental aim of The Hive and pupils are given many opportunities to socialise with their peers and feel a part of their own year groups. For example, pupils from The Hive are included in celebration assemblies each week, take part in their year group trips and in-house visits, are celebrated for attendance and attend suitable lessons within their year groups.

Assessment: The pupils in The Hive are assessed on an individual basis, rather than having ‘year group goals’  we focus on your child’s personal needs and use the topics to teach them their next steps.

The following criteria is used to determine when a pupil is ready to transition into the mainstream classroom. By the end of their time in The Hive, pupils will be able to:

• Sit and join in with a group activity for 5 minutes
• Hold attention on an adult-directed activity for 10 minutes
• Communicate wants and needs verbally or by using PECs confidently
• Managing emotions in class – use strategies to re-regulate when needed
• Engage in the learning environment with a purpose
• Follow routines/expectations with the support of visuals
