Hello and welcome to Year 2!
We’re looking forward to a wonderful term with your children.
I am Mr Kerr, your class teacher, and Ms Lawrence is our teaching assistant. We are both excited to teach your children over the next year, and hope to make learning engaging and interesting for everyone.
If you would like to talk to any of the Year 2 team, please look out for us in the playground before and after school. As always, we are happy to speak to you about any concerns you may have.
This Autumn term we’re starting our History unit on castles in the Middle Ages. This is such an exciting and interesting topic, which we’re sure the children will love learning about. We’ll learn all about why castles were built, how they have changed over time and what life in a medieval castle was like.
We’re also starting our new Geography unit, Our World. We will learn about the world around us including the continents, the oceans and different iconic landmarks.
In Literacy, we will be making sure that we are confident with the Year 1 curriculum before moving onto the Year 2 writing curriculum. We use the Talk for Writing approach in class, and are starting with the story of ‘Not Now, Bernard’ and making our own adaptations to the story.
We’ll be learning about Materials in Science. Our focus will be on identifying and comparing the suitability of every day materials and working scientifically to find out how the shapes of solid objects can be changed.
In Maths, we are using the White Rose curriculum and going back over some key concepts from Year 1 before moving quickly onto the Year 2 curriculum. Our first topic is Place Value and once we are secure with this, we will move onto addition and subtraction. We will also be continuing to make sure we know our times tables fluently – in Year 2 the children are expected to know their 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
Our PE sessions will be on a Thursday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school on these days. Our school PE kit is a white t-shirt and black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and trainers or pumps. Please make sure that your child’s PE kit is labelled with their name.
Reading books: In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to read a variety of text types and books. Fluency and comprehension are very important, and this is something which can be helped by 10 minutes reading at home every day. Your child will have the opportunity to independently choose their reading books on a Monday and Thursday. We do guided reading sessions each day and your child is heard twice a week to check their progress in reading. We formally assess your child three times a year using a reading assessment, but informal assessment takes place every day.
Homework in Year 2 consists of daily reading for at least 10 minutes (of your child’s banded or coloured reading book, one level below their class reading level), counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and completing their Maths homework, set each week on Class Dojo. We will also send home a ‘Homework Menu’ each half term, which is a list of activities related to our learning in class. Your child may choose some or all of these activities to complete at home then bring into class.
