Year Four Copy

Dear Parents, Carers and Families,

We would like to first say a big ‘welcome to Year 4’. Firstly, we would like to introduce ourselves. I am Mr Pettitt and Ms Ogunyemi, the class teachers and Mrs Rowland and Miss Salik is the teaching assistants. We are extremely excited to be teaching your child over the next academic year and hope to make learning engaging and interesting for all. For this year, there are a few things that we want you to bear in mind so that the children can get the most out of their learning.

This year, children will be taking part in swimming lessons. Children must bring a towel, a swimming cap and a swimming costume (no swimming goggles) every Wednesday. Children will be walked down to the local swimming pool 15 minutes away from the school, where there will always be three trusted adults taking care of them.

In maths, our focus will be recap place value from Year 3 and then move onto larger numbers up to 10,000. We will also continue to practise our multiplication tables, understand and measure perimeter, and then move onto addition and subtraction and multiplication and division

We’ll do lots of reading and writing about texts set in ancient Rome, in Literacy e.g. Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit, The Story of Romulus and Remus and other Roman myths and legends.

Our PE lessons will take place every Friday. Please ensure that children bring their PE kits on a Friday morning. Our PE kits are a white t-shirt, dark coloured shorts or tracksuit bottoms, and trainers or pumps. Can we ask for no cropped T-shirts, brightly coloured PE kits and no jewellery.

Children will also need to bring back their homework every Friday. Children will be given a maths or English homework every Friday that is related to their learning.

This year in June, children will be taking the Multiplication Test Check. This is a statutory test that all children in Year 4 will have to sit. This will test your child’s knowledge

Finally, children should be reading at regularly at home and should bring their reading books into school every day too. This is so we can read regularly with the children to ensure they are getting access to high quality texts.

If anybody has any questions, we are always happy to help and support you and your child.

Mr Pettitt and Ms Ogunyemi

Summer Term 2022

Topics Toggle

This term our topic will be ‘My Manchester’. This is such an exciting and interesting topic that we’re sure the children will love learning about. We’ll learn all about what makes our city of Manchester so famous. We will dive into the life of our Change Maker, Emmeline Pankhurst and the Suffragettes, and how their work paved the way for women gaining the vote. We will continue our journey to explore the history of Manchester including how it industry and rich culture helped it become a global city.

Literacy Toggle

In literacy we will be writing suspense stories. We will carefully start constructing stories which send shivers down your spine and make your heart race with anticipation. For our non-fiction unit, we will be exploring how to write instruction texts using appropriate sub-headings and time conjunctions.

Reading Toggle

In our reading lessons, we will be reading a variety of text types and books by a variety of authors. Fluency and comprehension are very important and this is something which can be helped by 10 minutes reading at home every day. As our class novel, we will be reading Varjak Paw by S.F. Said.

Science Toggle

We’ll be learning about animals, in Science and investigating the digestive system of humans. We will also be exploring the different types of teeth, their functions and what we can do to keep them healthy. We will also explore food chains and gain an in-depth understanding of producer, prey and predator.

Maths Toggle

In Maths we’ll focus on decimals, percentages and fractions. We will then move onto telling the time. This is something you can help with at home by asking your child to help read a clock (both analogue and digital) to tell you the time.

After half term, Y4 pupils across the country will also be undertaking the MTC test. Pupils will have to answer 25 questions and have 6 seconds to answer each one. To help with these, please continue to access Timestable Rockstars (especially Soundcheck) as this will really help your child’s fluency and speed.

P.E Toggle

We’ll continue with our weekly PE sessions, this will take place on a Friday morning, as well as our weekly swimming lessons at Broughton Swimming Baths on a Wednesday afternoon. We may be late returning to school some weeks; however, we hope to be back at school no later than 3:25 each week.
