Hello and welcome back to Spring term to Year 4,
Year 4’s team is made up of Ms Jolleys (Mondays and Tuesdays), Ms Ogunyemi (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) and Mrs Ahmed (every day) and Dorina, our volunteer helper on Wednesdays and Fridays.
This half term we are also joined by a Trainee Teacher, Mr Khalid.
We have welcomed some new pupils into Year 4 this half term., as well as sadly having to say goodbye to a few pupils. We’ll miss them very much.
We are continuing our focus on speaking and listening and developing our emotional literacy and well being in Year 4, through daily meditation and speaking and listening sessions and regular Circle Times.
We have started a new topic on My Manchester, a mainly Geography-based topic learning about where Manchester is, why it has grown into such a powerful and influential city and who lives here and why. A learning walk around our local area to look at the buildings of Cheetham Hill and how their use has changed over the years, will help us understand more about the area. We will also cover lots of History learning by looking at our local area of Cheetham Hill and Manchester city centre and how they have changed over the last 150 years and we will develop our skills in Art by looking at LS Lowry, the famous Salford artist. Lots of our learning in literacy will also be Manchester-focused ie. learning about well known Manchester poets and writing raps and poems about our city!
In Maths we have started to multiply and divide numbers up to 1000 and have begun our learning on Time, learning about o’clock, half past and quarter to/past. We will also look at 24 hour clock times. Any help with telling the time at home would be really helpful! We will continue to focus on times tables in Maths in Year 4. We will be focusing on a different times table each week and there will be times table homework sent home each Friday, with a test the following Friday – so please support your child in learning their times tables at home.
In Science our new topic is; Sound, where we’ll use hands on learning opportunities to make musical instruments which demonstrate how vibrations travel in sound waves. We will also attempt to make paper cup telephones.
PE, in Year 4, will be on Wednesdays, this will consist of a sports session with a coach from Manchester City. Children should have their PE kits in at the start of the week and take them home each Friday. Year 4 also have a weekly swimming lesson on Thursdays at Abraham Moss Leisure Centre. Please ensure your child has a swimming costume/trunks and a hat (if they have long hair) and a towel in school, every Thursday.
Homework will be daily reading with your child so that children can explore a variety of texts and authors. There will also be weekly times tables homework. Children will also have talk homework to support them with their language skills. Children will be asked to complete one Topic homework on an occasional basis.
Please do not hesitate to come and ask if there are any questions that you might have. Ms Jolleys or Ms Ogumyemi will be out on the playground before and after school every day, so please come and talk to us if there’s anything you wish to discuss.
Thank you for your continued support.
Ms Jolleys and Ms Ogunyemi and Mrs Ahmed.
